Carpet Stain Removal Tips

Food Stains:

Coffee, Juice and Wine

Using a clean terry cloth or paper towels, blot up all of the excess liquid. Do not scrub. Next, apply club soda to the area. After a few seconds blot out the stain with clean, dry paper towels a second time. Repeat with clean water to rinse the area. Finally, if these things do not remove the stain, apply hydrogen peroxide to the area and let it sit. Blot away any excess liquid.

Chocolate or Ice Cream

Mix one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with one cup of water. Apply to a clean terry cloth and then to the area. Blot as much as possible with dry, clean paper towels or terry cloths. Repeat this process until all of the stain has been successfully removed.

Grease or Oily Stains

Apply a non oily, non caustic dry cleaning solvent to the area. Use only a small amount. You should check to make sure that this product will not stain the carpet itself by testing it in a hidden area first. Rinse the area with warm water and blot it dry.

Other Common Household Stains:

Candle Wax Stains

Using a dull knife scrape up the excess wax that has hardened. Gently remove the debris. If wax remains, layer terry cloth or white paper towels to the area and apply a warm iron over the top. This will gently melt the wax and will allow the towel/cloth to slowly pull the wax out of the carpet.

Pet Stains

Blot up any and all excessive liquid. Then, apply one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and one cup of water in a spray solution to the area. Repeate blotting. Do not use ammonia. If dishwashing spray solution does not fully remove stain, try purchasing Pet Stain Remover. Several companies make very effective formulas and are available at most stores.

Odors

Sprinkle the area with baking soda and allow it to sit over night or at least a few hours. Vacuum.

The key to removing stains from your carpet are to work as quickly as possible. Work the stain before it sets or gets deep into the pile. Also check any chemical that you will be using on your carpet on a hidden spot. If all else fails, call in a professional carpet cleaner to help you.
